Gold Beach - 60 Years On

The Rifle Volunteers Band

The Devon and Dorset Band of the Rifle Volunteers, based in Exeter in Devon, performed in the centre of Ver sur Mer on the evening of Saturday 5th June 2004.

The swing section of the band also be provided live music for the 1940s style dance at the Salle des Fetes in Ver sur Mer on the evening of Monday 7th June.

A bugler from the band played at the commemoration ceremony and closing ceremony held at the event on 6th and 8th June 2004 respectively.

There has been a Territorial Army Band in Devon since 1908. During the World Wars the Band was suspended and the Bandsmen assumed their normal war time duties as stretcher-bearers.

The 4th, 5th, and 6th Battalions of the Devonshire Regiment amalgamated in 1950 to form the 4th Battalion The Devonshire Regiment with their own band. In 1967 the Battalion was integrated into the Wessex Regiment. The Band remained in Devon as The Devon Band of the Wessex Volunteers.

Band The organisers offer their thanks to the band's Director of Music, Major Chris Willis, and the band members, many of whom are decorated ex-regular servicemen and women.
